WHAT IS TRIBAL DANCE?
You have already probably heard about classical belly dance called Raks Sharki, sometimes also called cabaret style belly dance. The main difference between classical „ cabaret “ and tribal style belly dance is in the design and the whole system of the dance. The key structure of tribal dance is sophisticated controlled group improvisation. The whole dance is a team-work between two or more dancers while the group is guided by one leading dancer, giving signals (using hand movements, head , body language) which are essentially invisible to the audience. The other dancers follow. It is dynamic exchange and transmissions between dancing steps, combinations and formations where the leading dancer decides the order of pre-learned dance steps. Tribal is indeed a „strong“ dance based on strong physique and extensive usage of muscle apparatus. By contrast the sequent, overall effect is very graceful and the dance is basically improvised choreography |
danced in a dynamic whirlwind of movement and color. Its origin can be tracked down to traditional folkloric dance elements of India, Central Asia, Middle East, Arabia and Spain. However, tribal dance is a contemporary 20th century phenomenon, which began to evolve in the 70s in America. It is a fusion of traditional and oriental dances, and therefore it adapts and reacts to up-to-date multicultural tendencies and demanding audience. Like dances are inspired by the dance traditions of those countries, so are the costumes. All costumes and accessories are handmade, combining very earthy and vibrant colors designed to create down-to-earth feeling. Jewelry is heavy, usually antique, valuable and one of a kind pieces. Nevertheless it is not a uniform style of costuming, each tribe has its own, characteristic style of decorating itself, which again creates the uniqueness. |
